DC-BASED EDUCATION INITIATIVE PROJECT 312 FINDS POWERFUL ALLY IN "I HAVE A DREAM"® FOUNDATION

Multi-year giving program to be launched June 1

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Thirty fifth-grade students at Emery Elementary School in northeast Washington, D.C. will soon have access to comprehensive, long-term programs to prepare them for college, thanks to a multi-year educational partnership.

To provide a strong foundation for implementing the “I Have a Dream” Program (IHAD) model, IHAD–Project 312 will launch its joint program June 1. Sponsored by D.C. Business Leaders Harry Nick, Robert Pincus and Larry Siegel, the entire class of students will be provided with an eight-year, comprehensive program of tutoring, mentoring, enrichment and family outreach. Upon graduation from high school in 2009, students meeting the requirements of an accredited university will be awarded scholarships to pursue higher education.

The inspiration for “I Have A Dream”—Project 312 originated in the classroom of Teach For America’s Nicholas Ehrmann, the teacher of Room 312 – a fourth grade classroom at Emery Elementary School in Washington, D.C. Photography inspired the mission of Project 312 by building bridges of trust in the classroom.

“Through my lens, I saw powerful, graceful, extraordinary children,” commented Mr. Ehrmann, “Not hardened, incorrigible kids as they are often portrayed.”

Encouraged by such transformations, Ehrmann aggressively pursued community partnerships in order to form “I Have A Dream”—Project 312.He did so at the elementary school level to establish an enduring educational connection that fosters long-term achievement and personal growth.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our organization to tap into the generosity of individuals in our community to create lasting opportunities for our students,” said Ehrmann.
